WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) - The capital murder trial for Mark Norwood in the 1986 killing of Christine Morton is on track to begin in January in San Angelo.
Norwood, along with his lawyers and Williamson County prosecutors were in court on Wednesday for a procedural hearing. Cameras were not permitted in the courthouse, and the lawyers declined to be formally interviewed.
In June, the trial was moved to West Texas because of intensive news coverage of the case. Morton's husband, Michael, was convicted of her killing but was freed in August after DNA linked Norwood to the death
Michael Morton's release spurred much public debate and prompted a future inquiry into District Judge Ken Anderson's role in the prosecution a quarter-century ago
.According to public records, Norwood has more than a dozen arrests in the last 30 years.
While in his late 20s, Norwood was arrested seven times in Tennessee. According to public records, between 1980 and 1983 he was arrested for various charges from arson to destruction of property. The most violent charge was aggravated assault involving a weapon with the intent to commit murder.
