SAN ANTONIO (KXAN) - A Bexar County Sheriff's Office deputy is on administrative leave following the deaths of two K-9 animals left in his care.
According to BCSO, the two patrol service canines died on Thursday when the dogs were accidentally left inside the patrol vehicle's kennel overnight. It is believed that the dogs suffered from heat exposure.
Deputy Steve Benoy, a 23-year veteran of the sheriff's office has been assigned to the K-9 Section for 13 years.
According to a press release from the sheriff's office, Benoy is "devastated by this tragic accident" and that Benoy has a "flawless record."
Ortiz stated that "Deputy Benoy has been a dedicated officer during his career; he has never received any discipline during his tenure with the Sheriff's Office. It is my belief that this is a tragic accident however; the Sheriff's Office is following standard procedures in conducting a thorough investigation."
Animal Care Services and the Bexar County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation Division are working together in this investigation.
