AUSTIN (KXAN) - The Texas Department of Transportation kicked off National Distracted Driving Month with a rally Wednesday on the steps of the state Capitol.
Officials hope to raise awareness about how dangerous distracted driving is and to encourage Texas drivers to put away their cell phone when on the road.
TxDOT also launched its own safe driving campaign: "Talk. Text. Crash" . In 2009, 3,308 crashes were attributed to cell phone use in Texas. 41 of those crashes were fatal.
Several agencies were represented including, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration . State Rep. Tom Craddick, R-Midland, also attended the rally.
The rally started at 12:30 p.m. on the south steps of the Capitol.
