AUSTIN (KXAN) - Austin police arrested former Texas Speaker of the House Gibson "Gib" Lewis, 72, overnight near Fourth and Lavaca streets.

Police said the incident started around 11:30 p.m. and that he was booked shortly after that into the Travis County Jail on a DWI. Records indicate Lewis' blood alcohol concentration measured at 0.159 when he blew into the breathalyzer, which is almost twice the legal limit.

Lewis spent 20 years as a Texas legislator and served as the 71st speaker of the house from 1983 to 1993.

Lewis is not in custody Friday morning.
