Winds knock down nesting eagles' tree near Lake Waco
Birds were in process of constructing home

WACO, Texas (AP) — High winds have taken off the top of a dead cottonwood tree at Lake Waco where a pair of nesting eagles has been building a home.
Now federal and local officials tell the Waco Tribune-Herald they're thinking about accelerating their plans to construct a more sturdy 40-foot tower intended to provide a nesting area for the birds.
The project by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Waco's Cameron Park Zoo and the Central Texas Audubon Society was supposed to get under way next summer. But that would be after the current nesting season.
The eagles already lost chicks a couple years ago when a nearby tree then holding their nest toppled into the lake.
