BIG LAKE, Texas (AP) — A standoff between law officers and a man suspected of fatally shooting a West Texas deputy continues.

DPS Trooper Phillip "Sparky" Dean on Thursday afternoon said there appeared to be some activity at a house in Big Lake where the suspect allegedly was barricaded.

The San Angelo Standard-Times reports officers wearing body armor moved toward the house behind a remote-controlled rover.

Reagan County Sheriff Jeff Garner says the standoff began around 6:20 p.m. Wednesday after Deputy Josh Mitchell was killed. Dean says Mitchell was "on official business, trying to make contact" with the unidentified suspect when the 26-year-old deputy was shot.

Records show Mitchell started out with the sheriff's department as a jailer in 2005.

The sheriff says Mitchell had been with the department for at least eight years.

Big Lake is a town of about 2,900, located 70 miles southeast of Midland.
