COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KXAN) - The events surrounding a deadly shootout in College Station that killed three unfolded rapidly in the small, college town.

Serving an eviction notice near the Texas A&M campus turned deadly Monday afternoon when the 35-year-old man being evicted, Thomas Alton Caffall, started shooting. Police said they returned fire, killing him.

Brazos County Constable Brian Bachmann, 41, and 51-year-old Chris Northcliff died, and four others were hurt in the crossfire.

A total of five people -- including Caffall -- were shot. The gunman was taken into custody before he died at the hospital, officials said.

The incident unfolded starting at about 12:15 p.m. at 211 Fidelity St. -- not far from Kyle Field, home of the Texas Aggies football team. Several officers were called in and exchanged fire with with the man who was said to be barricaded inside a home.

Officials said it appeared as though Bachmann was shot as he approached the gunman's house to serve an eviction notice. Caffall also began shooting at other people around the home, firing off multiple rounds.

Calls from 911 came to the College Station Police Department, and several officers were dispatched.

The officers who arrived at the home had shots fired at them, and they returned fire -- which went on for several minutes. Officers were able to then actually shoot Caffall.
