SAN ANTONIO (AP) — A Texas soldier has pleaded guilty in a recruiting scam that generated $2,000 referral bonuses.

A federal judge in San Antonio on Thursday accepted the plea from Spc. Richard Garcia Jr. He pleaded guilty to wire fraud conspiracy.

Garcia was accused of lying about recruiting people who were already going into the military. The time frame was 2005 to 2010.

Some recruiters allegedly paid fellow military personnel and contractors for the names and Social Security numbers of enlistees. Details of how Garcia allegedly knew some recruits and were submitted via an online website.

Garcia faces more than two years in prison when he's sentenced in November.

Several other service members have pleaded guilty in the scheme that prosecutors say netted more than $200,000 in unearned bonuses.
