AUSTIN (KXAN) - According to the annual "Kids Count" report - Texas is lowering its teen pregnancy rate, but still lagging behind most states.

In Texas, 64 of every 1,000 births are from teenage mothers - with the national rate at 43 births per 1,000.

Last year, Texas ranked worst in the nation. This year the Lone Start state is up to 48th, ahead of New Mexico and Mississippi.

A recent study from Texas State University found 96 percent of Texas school districts teach abstinence-only sex education - or nothing at all.

The report is done by the Annie E. Casey Foundation.
