DALLAS (KXAN/AP) - According to a report in the Dallas Morning News, singer Randy Travis was arrested early Monday on a charge of public intoxication, which is a Class C misdemeanor.
Denton County Sheriff's Department spokesman Tom Reedy told the Dallas newspaper that the arrest happened outside Sanger Baptist Church. The 52-year-old country singer was taken to jail at about 1:30 a.m. and later released.
Travis kicked off a national tour in January to celebrate 25 years as a country-western superstar. He has won seven Grammy awards for his "new traditionalist" style, one that has inspired singers such as Alan Jackson, Brad Paisley, Kenny Chesney, Tim McGraw, Josh Turner and Carrie Underwood. Those singers, along with other famed artists, joined Travis on his silver anniversary CD recording, called "25th Anniversary Celebration."
In a previous incident reported in the Dallas paper on Sept. 26 Travis' tour manager explained why the singer collapsed onstage during a concert in Fort Worth, stating Travis had a bad reaction to decongestant allergy medication.
Travis owns the the Chrysallis Ranch outside nearby Tioga . He apologized in a statement to The Associated Press "for what resulted following an evening of celebrating the Super Bowl."
Travis, who launches a concert tour Friday, says he's "committed to being responsible and accountable."
