DALLAS (AP/KXAN) - "Dallas" actor Larry Hagman will be remembered this week during private, invitation-only services in Dallas and Los Angeles.
The television actor known for starring as slick oilman J.R. Ewing on "Dallas" and Major Tony Nelson on "I Dream of Jeannie" died Friday of complications from cancer. He was 81.
Hagman's personal manager John Castonia said Monday that the memorial services will celebrate the Fort Worth native's life. He declined to provide details.
Hagman been filming the new edition of "Dallas" for the TNT network.
Hagman was diagnosed in 1992 with cirrhosis of the liver and acknowledged that he drank heavily for years. In 1995, a malignant tumor was discovered on his liver and he underwent a transplant.
The family issued a statement posted on Hagman's website after his death:
"Larry was back in his beloved Dallas re-enacting the iconic role he loved most. Larry's family and close friends had joined him in Dallas for the Thanksgiving holiday. When he passed, he was surrounded by loved ones. It was a peaceful passing, just as he had wished for."
The family requested privacy.
Hagman became an advocate for organ donation and anti-smoking efforts.
Hagman was born on Sept. 21, 1931, in Fort Worth, Texas, to actress Mary Martin and lawyer Ben Hagman. His mother had a long-running career on stage and in film, including playing the role of "Peter Pan" on Broadway, for which she won a Tony award in 1954. She also played the lead role of nurse Nellie Forbush in "South Pacific" on Broadway.
After his parents divorced, Hagman moved to Los Angeles with his grandmother and mother.
In 1989, she received the Kennedy Center Honors , an annual honor for career achievements. Martin is buried in her hometown of Weatherford, Texas.
Hagman's estate in Ojai , which he and wife, Maj, named "Heaven," has been listed for sale at a price of $6,495,000.
