HOUSTON (AP) - An East Texas police officer is among 25 defendants swept up in a federal indictment of members and associates of the Texas Mexican Mafia prison gang.
Federal prosecutors said Thursday that 50-year-old Michael Mares, a police officer in Onalaska, knowingly provided firearms to a convicted felon on two occasions.
Onalaska police Chief Ron Gilbert says he was just beginning to look into the allegations, but planned to terminate Mares. He said he had not spoken with his officer since receiving the news late Wednesday. It was not immediately known if Mares had an attorney.
The indictment says Mares sold pistols to a convicted felon in 2010 and 2011.
The indictment charges people from various cities with crimes that include drug trafficking, weapons offenses and racketeering.
