Pile-up snarls I-35 south of Waco

WACO, Texas (KXAN) - One person was killed Monday in giant pileup on Interstate 35 between Temple and Waco that involving four 18-wheelers and nine passenger cars, media outlets in the area were reporting.

Northbound traffic on the normally busy freeway that spans Texas from the Red River to the Rio Grande was expected to be clogged at least until nightfall.

The person who died was not immediately identified, but Waco television station KWTX said a body was pulled from a car that had been wedged underneath a tractor-trailer. The wreck occurred around 12:30 p.m. near the town of Bruceville-Eddy.

KCEN, another Waco station, said traffic was being diverted to service roads in the area of mile marker 314 and that the backup had reached five miles by 2 p.m.

According to The Associated Press, 17 people were injured in the crash.
