Old oak tree to be town down for track
Baylor University says it should be preserved

WACO, Texas (AP) - A Waco oak tree that could be up to 500 years old is set to be torn down for a new middle school track and practice field.
The tree has survived prairie fires, droughts, settlements of Indians and pioneers and a massive tornado.
Superintendent Bonnie Cain told the Waco Tribune-Herald that the Waco school district's policy is to preserve trees when possible. But she says in this case, there is nowhere else to put the track and field for Indian Springs Middle School.
The tree is by no means the biggest in the state.
But Baylor University biology professor and forest ecology expert Joseph White says the tree should be preserved.
White measured the tree's trunk as being 133 inches in circumference and 49 inches in diameter.
