Neighborhood near A&M still taped off

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KXAN) - The neighborhood where deadly gunfire broke out in College Station -- killing three -- is still taped off Tuesday morning as authorities continue to investigate.

"The investigation continues today, and the crime scene is still being processed," said College Station Police Chief Jeff Capps during a Tuesday morning news conference. "That will go on for most of the day and maybe into the night."

Capps didn't offer much new information about the multiagency investigation but said that they would keep everyone updated as additional information becomes available throughout the day.

Serving an eviction notice near the Texas A&M campus turned deadly Monday afternoon when the 35-year-old man being evicted, Thomas Alton Caffall, started shooting.

Police said they returned fire, killing him.

Brazos County Constable Brian Bachmann, 41, and 51-year-old Chris Northcliff died, and four others were hurt in the crossfire.

A total of five people -- including Caffall -- were shot. The gunman was taken into custody before he died at the hospital, officials said.

Hurt in the shooting

• Houston mother Barbara Holdsworth, 51, reportedly underwent surgery after being shot in the lungs. She is in stable, but serious, condition.
• College Station Police Officer Justin Oehlke, 25, was shot in the calf and is in stable condition after undergoing surgery Monday. He has been on the force for a year.
• Bryan Police Officer Brad Smith, 54, was injured by shrapnel and was treated and released from the hospital. He has been with the department for 15 years.
• Bryan Police Officer Phil Dorsett, 30, was injured by shrapnel. He has been with the department for five years.

Capps said he is hopeful things will turn out well for the officers injured in the shooting.

"For the other victims’ families, our thoughts and prayers are with them as well," said Capps.

Across College Station, there have already been vigils and prayer services to honor the victims, and there will undoubtedly be more.

Officials said Bachmann, an 18-year law enforcement veteran, died at the hospital.

"Constable Bachmann was a pillar of this community, and our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends," College Station Assistant Police Chief Scott McCollum said of the constable, who leaves behind his wife, Donna, and their two children, Colby, 14, and 9-year-old Kaitlynn.

Brazos County Sheriff Chris Kirk said Bachmann was a good friend and a good man.

"I don't know anything about the investigation at this point except that Brian was doing his job and he was gunned down for doing it," the sheriff said. "Tragic tragic situation, and we're just devastated."

The incident unfolded starting at about 12:15 p.m. at 211 Fidelity St. -- not far from Kyle Field, home of the Texas Aggies football team. Several officers were called in and exchanged fire with with a man who was said to be barricaded inside a home, McCollum said.

McCollum said that it appeared that Bachmann was shot as he approached the gunman's house to serve an eviction notice. Calls from 911 came to the College Station Police Department and several officers were dispatched, he said.

The reports of the shootings came in from the university's campus alert system.

A&M spokeswoman Sherylon Carroll told the Associated Press that most students were not on campus Monday. The fall semester does not begin until August 27.

Meanwhile, A&M President R. Bowen Lofton called it a “a sad day in the Bryan-College Station community."

"We are deeply saddened to learn about the deaths of three individuals, including a law enforcement officer," he said. "My thoughts and prayers, as well I am sure of the entire Aggie community, go out to the families and close friends of those who died so tragically, those who were injured and anyone else personally impacted by this senseless act of violence.

"All of us at Texas A&M will do whatever we can today and in the coming days to serve in any way possible to ease the pain, tensions and concerns of all affected."

Gov. Rick Perry, who graduated from A&M, said his "prayers are with any of those that have been injured."
