AUSTIN (KXAN) - AAA reports the number of travelers for the Labor Day weekend will increase by 9 percent. That would mean nearly 2.5 million people getting away for the three-day holiday.

"This summer of 2010 is a substantial improvement compared to 2009 and we are encouraged by the Labor Day numbers. It's good to see more people are planning to travel to visit family, friends and exciting vacation destinations," said AAA Texas regional vice president and general manager Rhonda Wilson.

"I'm flying to Atlanta, Georgia, for a surprise birthday party for my best friend I have not seen in years. I'm real excited. Can't wait," said Michelle Kleber.

KXAN News caught up with Kleber at the airport. She's taking a break from her business this weekend to relax.

"I work 24-7, seven days a week and this is a break, and I'm kind of nervous about it, kind of nervous and a little stressed," Kleber said.

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is expected to have a normal weekend when it comes to passenger travel. AIr travel overall in Texas is up 3 percent. For the year, ABIA has an increase in air travelers, too.

"But, we have seen an increase over the year, we're up 5 percent for the year so far," said Jason Zielinski, ABIA spokesman.

"We're going to stay home, have a quiet evening," said Ollie Deshay. "Quiet day at home. Going to make my husband steaks on the portable grill."

Deshay was gassing up her car, but plans on staying in for the weekend.

"Avoid the traffic, we don't want all that," she said.

Gas prices are on the way down, the lowest in five years for a Labor Day holiday. Gas in some places as low as $2.45 per gallon.
