LOCKHART, Texas (KXAN) - 13-year-old Jack Renaud is getting ready for another exciting weekend while he tinkers with his go-kart.

The San Antonio native was one of 230 racers in Lockhart to race in the Lone Star Grand Prix on Saturday and Sunday. He says this race is special because he gets to race in circles around Lockhart's downtown.

"It's a great town, smooth streets," said Renaud. "It's going to be an awesome street race, very historic and this is special because it's a road race and it's just it makes everything a lot more cool."

Renaud is one of the many drivers here from across the state. Some are from outside the country. So far, they're impressed by what they see.

"I've been all around the country and different tracks and stuff like that, and I've seen it all" said Pat Stephenson. "This is a really special one."

As city workers prepare for race weekend, the city's mayor said it's one of the most exciting events to ever come to come to town.

"We're estimating over a quarter of a million dollars for the community," mayor Lew White said. "We've already got hopefully plans for additional hotels in the future so we're just going to grow around this event."

It may be a small race compared to the F1 half an hour away, but it's popular races like these where dreams of world championships for kids like Jack begin.

The Racing event is free for spectators both days. Fans can watch pre-qualifying races on Saturday and the main event is scheduled to start Sunday at 11 a.m.
