Texas AG Abbott appears for jury selection

ELDORADO, Texas (KXAN/AP) - Jury selection began Tuesday for a second member of a polygamist church raided in Texas last year. Allan Keate is accused of sexual assault of a child.

Keate was allegedly married in the polygamist group to a girl when she was 15. Authorities say she got pregnant when she was 16, younger than Texas' age of consent.

The 57-year-old faces up to life in prison if convicted.

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott made a surprise appearance at the trial, but he didn't actively participate in jury selection.

Abbott was introduced to more than 100 potential Schleicher County jurors in a state district court Tuesday afternoon and listened to individual questioning.

However, Abbott didn't directly question would-be jurors summoned in the case against Keate.

Abbott didn't comment on why he decided to make a rare trial appearance in the tiny West Texas town of Eldorado.

Keate is the second member of a polygamist group raided by Texas authorities to face criminal trial.

Raymond Jessop, the first member to face trial, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for sexual assault of a child last month.
