GLO, DRT seek Alamo gift shop manager

Bidding for contract opened in May of 2012

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (KXAN) - Every Texas child learns the story of the Alamo in grade school and for years the iconic historical landmark was entrusted to its care by the Daughters of the Republic of Texas.

The DRT used to own the property but it is now in the hands of the Texas General land Office as of Sept. 1, 2011. The DRT is currently in an interim agreement with  the GLO to operate the Alamo.

One area of the operation, however, has recently been advertised as “up-for-grabs.”

Both the GLO and DRT recently began seeking proposals from qualified firms to operate the gift shop at the Alamo Complex.

In an “advertisement” for the right management group the GLO and DRT said, “The awarded Respondent will be responsible for the operation and management of the gift shop under the direction of the GLO's management contractor the DRT.”

The gift shop is critical in funding the states most prized historical destination known around the world.

The Alamo site receives no monetary support from state or federal government. Funds collected from the gift shop, in conjunction with individual donations work together with private foundations to fund the general operation of the complex.

Neither agency has specified how long the bidding process, which opened in May of 2012, will remain up-for-grabs.

Those interested in placing a bid for the contract should contact Shelia Kirk with the GLO at 1700 North Congress Ave. Stephen F. Austin Building, Room 951, Austin, Texas 78701-1495 or by calling 512-463-5186.
