KILLEEN, Texas (KXAN/AP) - Killeen police said a Fort Hood soldier died after being shot while at an apartment, and investigators want to know who opened fire.
Police spokeswoman Carroll Smith said Joshua M. Wyatt, 22, was pronounced dead early Tuesday and that the death is not considered a suicide.
Officers late Monday responded to a Killeen apartment after getting a 911 call about a shooting to find Wyatt with a gunshot wound to the chest area.
The soldier died just after midnight as he was being transported to a hospital. An autopsy has been ordered.
Wyatt was from Charlotte, N.C., and he joined the military in April 2006 as an ammunition specialist.
He was deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from October 2007 through January 2009.
Wyatt's decorations and awards include the Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Army Service Ribbon.
Investigators are asking anyone with information to contact police at (254) 526-TIPS.
