KILLEEN, Texas (KXAN) - A Soldier stationed at Fort Hood has died after never recovering from a gunshot wound.
Spc. Austin James Sampson, 25, from Bliss, N.Y. died at Scott & White Hospital in Temple from injuries related to a gunshot wound.
Fort Hood officials say circumstances surrounding the accident on Jan. 3rd are being investigated by the Killeen Police Department.
Sampson served in Operation Iraqi Freedom from Nov. 2007 through Jan. 2009. He also served in operation new Dawn from Aug. 2010 to Aug. 2011.
Sampson's awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, two Army Good Conduct Medals, National Defense Service Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal with three campaign stars, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, and Overseas Service Ribbon.
Sampson was station at Ford hood since Nov. of 2009 and was assigned to Headquarters Troop, 3rd Squadron, 3rd Cavalry Regiment, Fort Hood, since Feb. 2010.
