'Fairy gardening' finds roots in Dallas

DALLAS (NBC/KXAS) - A gardening trend born in a big city known for small places is now finding roots in Dallas.

It's called "fairy gardening" and got its wings in New York.

Mother and businesswoman Amy Chinn is overseeing a new venture. It's a big idea meant to fit in the tiniest of spaces.

"And it was just so, so enchanting to me," said Chinn, owner of Amy Kate Gardens.

Think of dollhouse-sized furniture but in potted plants.

It was born out of necessity in New York as people who couldn't have full-blown gardens. They bought plants for their patio and started putting things in them, and then fairy gardening was born.

"It's not as hard as it looked, once you kind of get your ideas going,” said one fairy gardener.

Chinn has started her own company throwing house parties called Amy Kate Gardens, where she comes to the customer and the customers buys what they want to make whatever it is in the world they imagine.

"The biggest thing I hear is, 'I want to live there.' 'This is where I wish I could spend an afternoon.' 'I wish I could have your life, if there is a fairy in there,’" said Chinn.

She got the idea roughly a year ago by trying to build one herself.

She was frustrated how there was no centralized place to go where to get these specially grown plants that are the perfect size for all this miniature stuff. And all of that comes in different sizes, too.

From the furniture, to the stones, to, of course, the fairies, the new way of expressing oneself is redefining what it means to have a green thumb.
