Experts have new fears over bat disease

COMAL COUNTY, Texas (NBC) - Wildlife experts in Texas have new fears about a disease killing bats.

They're worried that area bats are harboring the disease and even spreading it.

White Nose Syndrome causes bats to starve and dehydrate and causes a classic white color around the nose.

So far, it has not been found in Texas caves, but some experts said it's very possible.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife officials said about 6 million bats have died in the United States in four years from the disease.

While most Mexican Freetail bats don't seem to be affected by White Nose, experts said they now worry they are carriers.

This summer is going to be very important because bat experts will be at Bracken Cave in Comal County waiting for when the bats return from the South -- looking for any sign of the disease.
