CALDWELL COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) - An inmate in the Caldwell County jail died Sunday night after falling in the restroom and hitting his head, the Sheriff's Office said Monday.
George Ramirez, 70, had regained consciousness after jail staff members were taking him by wheelchair to the medical office when he began complaining of chest pains, the sheriff's office said. A short time later, he stopped breathing.
""All attempts of resuscitation failed and the patient was pronounced deceased by Justice of the Peace Precinct 1 Matt Keily at 9 p.m.," the office said in a news release "Criminal Investigations was contacted and a detective was present to begin an investigation. The Texas Rangers were contacted to conduct an investigation of the in custody death."
An autopsy will be performed.
It was not immediately clear by Ramirez was in jail.
