Texas teens may face tanning regulation

FT. WORTH, Texas (AP) - Texas teens may lose their winter tans under proposed legislation to require a physician's written consent for them to use tanning beds.
House Bill 1310 would ban anyone younger than 18 from using a tanning facility without a doctor's note specifying the number of visits. Republican Rep. Burt Solomons of Carrollton said he filed the bill because of concerns about skin cancer.
At least 29 states have passed laws restricting teens from tanning salons. In Texas, present law requires children under 13 to have a physician's consent and anyone 15 or younger to have a parent in the salon while tanning.
The $5 billion indoor tanning industry opposes restrictions for minors.
The American Cancer Society recommends avoiding tanning devices, especially among those under age 18. It said up to 80 percent of an individual's lifetime sun exposure occurs during those early years.
