DALLAS (AP) - Gov. Rick Perry's re-election campaign has been asking Dallas City Hall for information about rival Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison and her husband. That is a signal that the campaign for 2010's Republican gubernatorial nomination could turn nasty and personal.
Ray Hutchison is a longtime Republican Party activist and a prominent Dallas bond attorney who has represented public agencies for decades.
Perry has promised a vigorous campaign if Hutchison challenges him in the March 2010 GOP primary, as she's said she will. Perry campaign spokesman Mark Miner said the campaign is, in his words, "interested, as most Texans would be, in how 'Senator Bailout's' husband's bond business has benefited from her job in D.C."
"Senator Bailout" is a label the Perry campaign has devised for the senator for her support of the initial federal financial-industry assistance plan.
Ray Hutchison said the Perry campaign has filed such open records requests statewide. He calls their fishing expedition "stupid" and said he has nit benefited from his wife's position as senator.
