POTH, Texas (AP) - Three young men are dead after a sport utility vehicle jammed with at least 13 suspected illegal immigrants plunged into a South Texas stock tank after a police chase.
The incident happened about 2 a.m. Wednesday near the town of Poth, about 35 miles southeast of San Antonio in Wilson County. Wilson County Sheriff Joe Tackitt says one of his deputies tried to stop the SUV because one of its headlights was out, but the vehicle sped away.
The SUV veered off and continued off-road, slamming through several fences, before plunging into the pond.
The suspected driver was among the 10 survivors rounded up. Three men were pulled dead from the waters.
Tackitt says the 10 survivors, including one woman, are believed to be from Guatemala and are in federal custody.
