2 dead in car-into-school-bus crash

BURNET, Texas (KXAN) - Two teenagers were killed after their car slammed into the back of a school bus with children on board. It happened on State Highway 29 between Bertram and Burnet on Thursday afternoon.

Both the 16-year old female driver and her 14-year old brother, who was a passenger in the car, were killed instantly.

Witnesses told KXAN News that both teenagers attended Burnet High School.

Some 13 students were on board the school bus that was hit by that four-door sedan, along with the bus driver. One of those students was taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries.

The wreck happened at 4:04 p.m. just west of County Road 252 and State Highway 29.

Department of Public Safety troopers had a majority of that section of SH 29 blocked off for about five hours while they officers investigated what happened and cleared the scene.

Both the mangled four-door sedan and the school bus were towed away around 9 p.m.

A witness waiting near the road to pick up his grandchildren from their bus stop said he saw a small car hit the school bus from the back. He estimated the car's speed at around 60 mph and said the car's roof was sheared off as it went under the bus.
