LAREDO, Texas (AP) - Two men, including a Mexican national, have pleaded guilty to an attempt to smuggle 300 assault rifle magazines to Mexico.

A Justice Department statement says Mexican national Teodoro Sanchez-Alejo and Alejandro Rivera-Ruiz of Laredo admitted to trying to trying to smuggle 300 high-capacity ammunition clips for AK-47 and AR-15 rifles.

According to court records, undercover U.S. agents responding to a smuggler's inquiry reached Sanchez, who agreed to a meeting at a Laredo service station. The agents delivered six duffle bags containing magazines, followed a few minutes later by Rivera's arrival with 50 more ammo clips.

Sanchez drove to a bridge to Mexico, where U.S. officers intercepted him and recovered the rifle magazines.

Both face up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Sentencing hasn't been scheduled.
