UT buys up potential porn domains

Among schools snagging ".xxx" domain names

    AUSTIN (KXAN) - The University of Texas is buying up a bunch of potential pornographic websites.

    UT is among several schools snapping up ".xxx" domain names in hopes of preventing pornographic parodies.

    Tuesday was the deadline for public sale of the adult-oriented domain names.

    The ".xxx" designation was created to more clearly identify sites with pornographic material.

    Register.com was listing the prices for the .xxx domain names as $129 per year.

    UT bought TexasSports.xxx and TexasBoxOffice.xxx -- among others. And they've worked to block others that contain trademarked names, such as HookEmHorns.xxx and UniversityOfTexas.xxx.
