AUSTIN (KXAN) - It’s the tale of a stuck opossum, commonly known as a Virginia opossum, and this particular critter is a KXAN neighbor, sort of.
KXAN News Photographer Frank Martinez, while heading to a shoot, spotted an opossum perched atop a utility pole wire Sunday morning behind the TV station.
The furry mammal, which is immune to rattlesnake venom, is the oldest animal in Texas. It is also the only pouched animal in the United States.
The opossum is rarely seen during daylight hours, as it is a nocturnal animal, so Frank’s Saturday morning sighting was a rare peak into the critter’s habitat.
So while the creature was stuck for a few hours, it certainly found its way to safety with its 50-million-year history of survival backing his journey to safety.
