NACOGDOCHES, Texas (AP) - The City of Nacogdoches is preparing to take on an education role with a city-run class called Nacogdoches 101.

The free civics lesson would shed light on city departments, the budget process, volunteerism and the opportunities citizens have to get involved.

If city commissioners approve the free program at their regular meeting Tuesday night, the classes could start as soon as January.

The program is modeled on the Citizens Police Academy. In that program, residents get a look at law enforcement.

City Manager Jim Jeffers told The Daily Sentinel that completion of the class might someday be a prerequisite for serving on city boards. However, it would not be required for elected officials.
