MANOR, Texas (KXAN) - A police officer in Central Texas delivered a baby boy on a highway after finding himself first on scene for the late-night call for help.
At 11:13 p.m. Wednesday, dispatchers sent Manor Police Cpl. Charles King to a call asking him to help Austin-Travis County EMS at U.S. Highway 290 East and Gregg Manor Road.
When King arrived at the scene, he found a woman in labor -- but no EMS -- and immediately stepped in to help her deliver the baby.
With 911 instructions over the phone, King made sure the baby was breathing and healthy shortly after the delivery. EMS crews then arrived and took over.
The baby boy and his mother were taken to St. David's Hospital.
King said later in the day that he would like to meet the mother and baby and talk with her at some point.
The birth was a dramatic contrast to the head-on collision that happened on the same highway Tuesday night, when an Austin pastor and his wife were killed .
