Austin keeps some weddings weird

AUSTIN (KXAN) - The royal wedding in London may have all the pomp and circumstance, but people around the Texas capital like to "Keep Austin (weddings) Weird."

Both the ceremonies, and the venues.

Daniel and Suzanne Louzau chose The Oasis on Lake Travis for their wedding for its spectacular sunset vistas. And being movie buffs, they performed scenes from "The Princess Bride."

Suzanne quoted from the movie: "We went to marriage, marriage is what brings us together."

"Everyone quoted along and laughed it was really fun," she added. "Austin is much more carefree. In Dallas you'll see more tradition. Here you see a personal stamp on ceremonies."

Jay and Jennifer Willson held their wedding alongside Lady Bird Lake.

Because Jay is such an avid fisherman, fishing was the theme, with anglers guest gifts and the wedding ring delivered on the hook of a fishing rod.

Leave the Details to Me wedding consultant Keri Wootton designed the motif.

"I think this personalized trend is definitely a bit of Austin," Wootton said. "Half my couples don't even live here anymore but they come back for the vibe, being open to unconventionality."

Speaking of unconventional, Roy Janik and Kaci Beeler were put off by all the traditional venues.

"You'd think it was special sharing a venue with thousands of couples who went before you, but for some reason it depressed us," Roy said.

So they wed at south Austin's Cathedral of Junk, a wooded lot filled with, well, junk.

"We love the Austin vibe, artsy and chill. We made it exactly the way we wanted to," Kaci said.

Finally, in the interest of fair reporting, this writer chose a small, conventional ceremony. But I did propose to my wife on a SCUBA diving trip, while we were 80 feet down. My proposal was prewritten on a slate, with a P.S. informing her this was a legitimate offer. She grabbed the regulator out of my mouth to give me a big kiss.

Needless to say it left me -- breathless.
