AUSTIN (KXAN) - Lawmakers and activists gathered downtown today to fight legislation that could change our state's voter registration requirements.
Senate Bill 362 would require Texas voters to verify their identity before casting a ballot.
But there's heated opposition...especially from Democrats who say the bill would not prevent fraud...but only make voting more difficult for the elderly and minorities.
"Nobody wants there to be fraud at the ballot box. And, if there's going to be fraud, that needs to be prosecuted. We maybe need even to enhance the penalty to stop fraud, but this isn't, nobody's been able to show that there's real fraud occuring here.," said Sen. Kirk Watson.
Similar voter ID bills have been brought up in Texas' last three
legislative sessions.
