Would allow weapons on campus

AUSTIN (AP) - The Texas Senate is debating whether to force public universities and colleges to allow concealed handgun license holders to carry their weapons on campus.

Supporters said it would reinforce their constitutional right to bear arms. Opponents said it would make campuses more dangerous with the potential for typical college disputes over grades, romances and fraternity rivalries to become deadly.

Texas college campuses are currently gun-free zones. Texas concealed handgun license holders must be at least 21 years old and pass a training course and a criminal background check.
