AUSTIN (AP) - With time running out in the Texas Legislature, Gov. Rick Perry is urging lawmakers change the state's Top 10 Percent law for college admissions.

Perry, after speaking at a University of Texas System regents ceremony Wednesday, said there is still time for action before the Legislature adjourns June 1.

He said the University of Texas at Austin in particular needs relief from the law giving automatic admission to Texas students who graduate in the top 10 percent of their high school class. He said the brightest students often leave Texas for other states because of it.

The Senate voted to cap top 10 percent admission at 60 percent of a university's entering freshman class. The House has not approved the measure.
