AUSTIN (KXAN) - Governor Rodrigo Medina De La Cruz of the Mexican border state of Nuevo Leon, along with business leaders from Texas and Nuevo Leon , met with Governor Perry this afternoon to discuss several important issues.
Perry Spokeswoman Katherine Cesinger said, "Certainly economic competitiveness, creating jobs, security, keeping our communities safe and continued cross-border relations."
Governor Medina De La Cruz said, "I have a strong relationship with Texas," as he spoke with Governor Perry during a photo opportunity in the Governor's Office.
The details about the meeting were kept behind close doors. But, with all the recent news about increasing security at our borders, that was sure to be a hot topic.
Cesinger said, "Continuing to make sure the border is secure helps to ensure that cross-border trade and travel that's legitimate can continue.
Just this week President Obama announced he'll be adding 1,200 soldiers to protect the U.S.-Mexico border. It's unclear exactly where those soldiers will be positioned.
Arizona native Brent Waters said, "I think it's a good thing."
Texan Miles Pequeno said, "I think it's bilateral. Change needs to happen on both sides. Less corruption. Better enforcement in Mexico. And there needs to be a little more accountability here in the states."
With individual states and the federal government battling out how to handle security, a closer relationship with Mexico may lead to a better solution overall.
Pequeno said, "I personally come from a family of immigrants from Mexico. Like it or hate it, we share citizens. And by that same way, we share an economy."
