AUSTIN (KXAN) - The metal detectors installed in the State Capitol are much like those you would find in an airport. And the procedure for going through one is much the same.

With these new metal detectors, there are certain procedures you'll have to go through when visiting the capitol.

All guests will be required to go through the detectors.

You'll be asked to remove any metal objects before walking through. And troopers do have the authority to check any and all bags.

For those in a wheel chair, troopers will use hand held wands to check for weapons.

Concealed handgun holders will still be able to bring their weapon, but they will have to show their concealed handgun license to enter. Troopers will check to see if this license has not been revoked.

If an unauthorized weapon is found, criminal charges could be brought against the individual.

Visitors are mixed about the change.

Regina Stein said, "I think it's fine. We want people to be protected and this is one way for people to have safety

Bryan D. McCloskey said, "It's definitely an inconvenience. Yes. It's not fun. It's the same as the airport or anything like that. It's kind of necessary in this day and age."

Capitol staff and legislatures will use a special access point. All they have to do is show their capitol badge and they can bypass the detectors.

This is all in an effort to create a safer environment on the capitol grounds for both guests and staff.
