Gov. race: Farouk Shami comes to Austin - If Texas voters consisted only of women with curly hair, Farouk Shami would be headed straight to the Governor's chair.

Creator of the CHI hair straightener and Biosilk hair care line, Shami is a lucrative businessman who is putting $10 million into his own campaign for Governor. With a platform of job creation, Shami recently closed down a factory in China to bring more than 1,200 jobs back to Texas. And, Shami said he's not stopping there.

"Im not waiting to be the Governor in Austin," he said. "I will be creating jobs as we go and I'm calling everybody in the communities to invest."

Shami said he is working with local businesses in communities around Texas to create solar panel manufacturing shops in order to spur job creation.

"The people of Texas are tired of career politicians and people who can talk and do nothing about it," he said.

In the Democratic primary, Shami faces some stiff competition. Houston Mayor Bill White recently announced his decision to run. Other candidates who have filed for the Democratic nomination include Felix Alvarado and Bill Dear. Kinky Friedman has also publicly announced his intention to seek the Democratic nomination for the Governor's race.

Hank Gilbert was a candidate in the race, but recently switched to run for the position of Agriculture Commissioner. He is now supporting Shami.

"I've traveled this whole state," said Gilbert. "And, I've heard people that call themselves voting Republicans and Independents who are sick and tired of what we have here in Austin."
