AUSTIN (KXAN) - One week after capturing the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate in Texas, Ted Cruz won a coveted speaking at the GOP National Convention this month in Tampa, Fla.

Cruz, a former Texas solicitor general who faces Democrat Paul Sadler in November, will join a group of convention speaks that includes former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker.

Since his upset win over Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst in the July 31 Republican Senate runoff, Cruz has been interviewed on Fox News' Sunday morning political show and is now considered a rising star in the national party.

So far, he is the only Texan named to address the GOP convention that runs Aug. 27-30.

On the Democratic side, San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro will deliver the keynote address when his party convenes in Charlotte, N.C., Sept. 4-6.
