SAN DIEGO (NBC) - The mystery is over now that the baby panda born five weeks ago at the San Diego Zoo is a boy.
The bouncing baby panda underwent his third examination Thursday, and the staff was able to determine his gender for the first time.
Veterinarians carefully measured the baby's belly, which indicates he is eating well. He weighs 3.2 pounds, a full pound more than he weighed last week.
Though we now know his gender, zoo officials won't name the cub until he is 100 days old -- which follows ancient Chinese tradition.
The zoo plans on reaching out to the public for help in naming the baby.
There is believed to be only about 1,600 giant pandas in the wild.
