HOUSTON (AP) - A Texas prison official says polygamist sect leader Warren Jeffs is sedated but responsive despite failing to eat and drink enough since receiving a life sentence for sexually assaulting underage girls.
Texas Department of Criminal Justice spokeswoman Michelle Lyons said Tuesday that 55-year-old Jeffs is expected to recover at the East Texas Medical Center in Tyler.
Lyons said the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints leader remained in critical but stable condition.
An official familiar with Jeffs' condition but not authorized to discuss it said on condition of anonymity Monday that Jeffs was in a medically induced coma.
Jeffs was convicted this month after prosecutors used DNA evidence to show he fathered a child with a 15-year-old girl — one of his 24 underage spiritual wives.
