AUSTIN (KXAN) - Liz Carpenter's daughter, Christy Carpenter, spoke out Saturday, remembering her mother's life and legacy. She said she was very proud of her mother, calling her a trailblazer. She also spoke about the special bond her mother had with Lady Bird Johnson.
"Working with President and Mrs. Johnson was really I think the greatest experience of her life," said Christy Carpenter. "She had such admiration and respect for Mrs. Johnson who was an extraordinary woman. The two of them forged a deep bond that lasted until the end of their lives."
Christy Carpenter talked about her mother's energy, creativity and great passion for life. She joked that her mother did not believe in retirement, writing and lecturing until just a few years ago.
"I think my mother was a true American original," said Christy Carpenter. "There never has been anybody quite like her and I suspect there never will be."
Christy Carpenter also said her mother will be remembered as an influential writer and journalist. In fact, it was her mother who wrote President Johnson's first word to the nation after President Kennedy was assassinated. Those famous words are now displayed at the LBJ Library.
The LBJ Library is hosting a special Liz Carpenter webpage , honoring her with photos and videos.
Many offered condolences on Saturday, including Austin Mayor Lee Leffingwell and Gov. Rick Perry:
"Liz Carpenter was a Texas trailblazer whose fierce independence and sharp mind consistently placed her near the center of power throughout her life. She embodied the legendary qualities of Texas women and showed America that gender is irrelevant when it comes to getting the job done. Her voice will be missed, but not forgotten. Anita and I extend our sincere condolences and prayers to her family, friends and admirers all over the world." - Gov. Rick Perry
"Liz Carpenter was delightful and witty. Her humor and her dedication to public service made a strong impression on American politics. I enjoyed the time I got to spend with her". Lee Leffingwell, Mayor
