Pflugerville (KXAN) - It has been years in the making. And now the new homeless coach is ready to roll and provide resources for the area's homeless men and women where ever they are.
Tom Baum, the founder of the Homeless Coach hopes his idea of creating a high-tech mobile office will provide a venue for the Central Texas' homeless community to meet and learn about the resources available to them.
"We have the ability for those on the internet to chat back ask questions provide advice, provide additional resources and also to just lift the spirits of the individual." Tom Baum said.
Individuals like Avon Owens.
"Somebody was telling me about this habitat on wheels program. There were people raising some funds for me and helping me get off the streets. A miracle just happened." said Avon Owens.
He used to be homeless himself. And now he is helping to get this RV up and running and ready to change lives. "... And that's the reason why I'm so happy." he smiled.
Tom said the Homeless Coach would not have happened without the help of over 200 volunteers, and 60 churches and businesses to refurbish the inside, set up the computer network and help equip the RV with monitors, computers and streaming webcams.
"We're celebrating 'community' because 'community' has created something that was basically being thrown out and damaged goods almost, and actually has transformed it and re-purposed in to something that is giving back to the community." said Baum.
From their computer screens they can stream video, and communicate with the outside world. It's not exactly "Facebook", but it is a form of social-media designed to provide positive results for transient people.
There are still a few finishing touches that will be wrapped up in a few weeks. But the new art inside of the RV painted by friends of the homeless heralds the end of construction... and the beginning of a new life for Central Texas' homeless.
