Soldier dies after he is hit by car

FORT HOOD, Texas (KXAN) - Fort Hood officials have released the name of a soldier who died from injuries suffered when he was hit by an automobile on Friday.

Bell County Justice of the Peace Garland Potvin pronounced him deceased at 11:40 p.m. the same day.

Sgt. Juan Mendoza Vargas, 38, whose home of record is listed as Las Vegas, Nev., entered the military in August 2006 as a chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear specialist. He was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, Phantom Command, III Corps, Fort Hood since September 2012.

Vargas deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom from February 2008 to February 2009 and from April 2010 to April 2011.

Vargas's awards and decorations include two Army Commendation Medals, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with two Campaign Stars, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, Combat Action Badge, Air Assault Badge, and Driver and Mechanic Badge with Driver Wheeled Vehicles.
