AUSTIN (KXAN) - Should disabled veterans have to pay to use toll roads in Texas? As part of a law in the state, toll authorities can choose whether to give those veterans a "free pass."
That's not the case in the Austin area.
Bam Rubenstein says that has really hurt him in the wallet. Rubenstein spends about $90 a month traveling on the Loop 1 and State Highway 45 toll roads. He was injured serving as an US Air Force firefighter pulling a pilot out of a fire.
"I don't know what else to do," Rubenstein said. "It is frustrating really. You think someone says we can do this and then you go ahhh, who cares about them? That's what I feel like TxDOT has decided."
Rubenstein says some areas, including Houston don't charge drivers with D-V or Medal of Honor license plates.
