FALLS CHURCH, Va. (AP/CNN) - The Virginia family of suspected Fort Hood shooter Nidal Malik Hasan says they are shocked and saddened by the events in Texas.

In a statement, Nader Hasan says his cousin, Maj. Nidal Hasan, is a U.S. citizen, was born in Arlington, Va., and attended local high schools. He eventually went to Virginia Tech.

Nader Hasan says the family is "filled with grief for the families" of the victims at Fort Hood. He says "Our family loves America" and is "proud of our country."

He says they know very few details about what happened at Fort Hood.

Family members told CNN's Wolf Blitzer that her cousin had told his family for years that he wanted out of the military, and that he was picked on after the 9/11 bombings.
