DONNA, Texas (AP) - U.S. customs officials say two North Carolina men await extradition on military desertion charges after they were detained at the U.S.-Mexico border.

In a statement, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said 23-year-olds Daniel Gene Vermette and David Conrad Reynolds entered the country Tuesday at the Donna International Bridge in South Texas. They were turned over to the FBI after customs officers confirmed the pair had active warrants for their arrest.

It wasn't immediately known what they were doing in Mexico or how long they were there.

Both men are from Jacksonville, N.C., home to the U.S. Marine Corps base Camp Lejeune and Marine Air Station New River. The Naval Criminal Investigative Service didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
