Officers cleared in Nov. 5 shooting in Williamson County

CEDAR PARK, Texas (KXAN) - The three officers involved in the Nov. 5 shooting that ended with a man taking his own life were cleared by a Williamson County grand jury.

"The grand jury heard testimony from a Williamson County Sheriff's office investigator and a Texas Ranger, who had conducted independent investigations," the sheriff's office said in statement. "The grand jury was asked to review the shooting as part of the District Attorney's policy to present all cases involving the use of deadly force by officers for such review."

At the scene of the shooting, a bullet grazed a police officer who responded to Harvest Moon Drive and Sun Chase Boulevard.

The man was identified Monday afternoon as George William Stokes, 58, of Missouri.

Stokes had held a woman hostage inside a home at 1601 Eagle Wing Dr., telling negotiators he needed "10 more minutes" in situation that quickly turned into much longer.

Sheriff's Sgt. John Foster said they finally got him to release the woman and that once she was out of the house, they told her to run. The suspect then reportedly started shooting once he saw her running away.

Officials said Stokes then went back into the home and shot himself. He was later pronounced dead at Round Rock Medical Center.
